Erik's rules of courtesy, Part 4
And now, a few short rules for better living:
Don't curse in public.
Don't spit.
Don't scratch yourself in public. You know what I mean.
Don't raise your voice unless it's an emergency. Same goes for the horn on your car.
Don't give criticism unless it's asked for. Even then, be constructive. When's the last time you said, "Hey, you're a dick!" and anything good came of it?
Be kind to animals. It's a sign of good character.
Listen
Make friends with a child. Treat them as a shorter but no less intelligent person, and you'd be amazed how it earns their respect.
Shake hands with a police officer. So few people bother.
Shake hands with a fireman or an EMT. See above.
Hold the door open for people.
Smile more. Make eye contact.
Read a book every week.
Get more sleep.
Stand in the other guy's shoes.
Get off your high horse.
Say "thank you" more often.
Learn to use a gun. Then learn not to use one.
Learn to build a fire, dress a wound and change a flat tire.
Learn about music.
Learn about history.
Take an object you use every day, and learn exactly how it works.
Go to a church, even if it's not yours.
Learn a foreign language.
Do unto others…
