Statism at work

October 17, 2007

This lovely bit of advice comes from a Cops Writing Cops, a site dedicated to "outing" police officers who have the audacity to enforce the law on their brethren.

Particulary [sic] troubling is the talk about making phone calls after the fact and getting things fixed with certain agencies. Boy is that stupid to post, what are you guys thinking? You trying to get somebody who helped you out indicted? Shut the heck up about that stuff.

Doug Dinsdale's tirade continues:

On the other hand, these arrogant dicks who feel that their brother officers don't deserve special treatment should be outed early and often. They're clueless outcasts and usually despised within their own departments. They're hated because they're jackasses and this is their way to show everybody what tough guys they are.

(…) Any cop that writes another cop paper deserves to get the fickle finger next time he's on the side of the road getting his arse kicked. They have no business wearing the uniform and in due time they'll step on their own puds enough times to end up getting canned one way or another. It's just a shame they bring so much vitriol to work with them everyday under the transparent and bogus banner of integrity. They only fool themselves and impress no one.

Good website. Lets just be careful with the "details" used to circumvent the bogus paper given by these skell cops while we administer them the kick in the nuts they well deserve.

"Let's be careful with the details," indeed. I'd really like to know who some of these officers really are.

Now, before you get your panties in a wad, I know that cops give each other "breaks" from time to time. I've had plenty tell me so. That's fine; it's kind of like the employee discount. However, they need to understand that getting a pass on a traffic violation is one heck of a favor, and hardly something to which they're entitled. There's simply no call to get so indignant when a fellow officer chooses to follow the letter of the law. If anything, cops should be the most understanding of that.

But this site takes the cake. Their justifications seem to boil down to two arguments:

  1. They put their lives in danger, so they're better than the rest of us and therefore deserve perks, and
  2. These are the same offenses for which they regularly let us lowly "regular civilians" off with a warning.

Both are wrong. Yes, officers do put themselves on the line, but that's the job, and they knew it when they signed on. Claiming that they're better than us and deserve preferential treatment as a matter of course is pure Statism, and it shouldn't be tolerated.

As far as their claims that they routinely let citizens off with warnings, wrong. On their FAQ page, they claim, "If you get a warning instead of a ticket from a motorcycle cop, go buy a lottery ticket, because you've already beaten the odds," and "here's how to get out of a ticket. Don't break the law." They'd be well served by taking their own advice.

One officer on the site claims, "I've given breaks before for people doing 19 miles over the limit. I have even let one go for doing 150+ on LSD." Lovely.

Notice that the majority of the complainants are from New York, a city whose police practices need little elucidation. They've even got a section of the site dedicated to "Dicks of the Month," who are officers with the stones to cite their own for infractions. Personally, my hat's off to all the "Dick" cops out there. Keep up the good work.
