The Episode III Trailer

The third and final Star Wars prequel comes out next may, but Lucasfilm has released the trailer. I managed to snag a copy, and it looks interesting so far. What’s odd is that the first half is comprised of footage from earlier movies, including a voiceover of Obi-Wan’s original description of Vader’s origin to Luke in A New Hope. I suppose it’s to bring audiences up to speed, and to make the connection.

If the horrible travesty of Phantom Menace hadn’t rattled my faith in Lucas, I might be looking forward to this movie with a bit more anticipation, but now I’m only mildly interested. I wasn’t too impressed with Attack of the Clones, either, but I went to watch it because, well, it was Star Wars, dammit, and I was supposed to at least give it a chance.

If nothing else, the first two prequels were visually astonishing, and this looks no different. Of course, this is the most crucial one in terms of plot and development (you DO know what happens, right? If not, watch the Empire Strikes Back immediately), so I’m hoping for an improvement in the scripting department, but I’m not holding my breath.

So, how’s it look? Neat. Parts of it are a fanboy’s wet dream, so let’s waste some bandwidth!

Chewbacca’s in it.

…and he’s brought a few friends. There appears to be an AT-AT in the background.

What look to be Geonosians riding giant beetles on the volcanic surface of Mustaphar, the planet where, well…you know.

Two capital ships exchanging fire above Coruscant. From what I’ve seen, this is going to be a huge naval battle, both in and above the atmosphere. It’s also the opening of the film, apparently. If this is getting front-loaded, I hope the rest of the film follows up.

A rescue ship sprays water on a downed Republic cruiser.

A precursor to the X-Wing fighter.

Mace Windu brings the pain. This takes place in Palpatine’s office. Yoda is also involved in the fight. And the bad guy?

This guy. Yep, the Emperor uses a lightsaber. Nice teeth.

All of which leads to this, of course. Presumably, this is the big final duel. Notice that both lightsabers are still blue. Anakin’s red one must come after his transformation.

And of course, the finished product.

Again, I’m taking a wait-and-see attitude, but visually at least, this should be amazing.
