Screw the Republicans. Not cool.
One would think they learned their lesson when Bill Clinton handily turned the 1995 shutdown back on them and short-circuited the so-called Republican revolution. John Boehner should remember, since he was fourth in charge of the party back then.
What they don’t seem to get is that the Affordable Care Act won’t be repealed under this administration. It won’t be delayed. It won’t be defunded. They don’t have the votes to override a veto, period. Shutting down inessential services will simply be seen by the public as childish brinkmanship, and folks aren’t all that pleased with them as it is.
If the Republicans really think they’re going to gain goodwill or influence from this in next year’s midterms, they’re sorely mistaken.
