Beryl on Ubuntu

Stuff like this is why I love Linux. Here’s Beryl running on Ubuntu Feisty:

Notice the nice transparent window borders. Everything’s easily configured through the Emerald theme manager. Many of the effects are hard to capture through screenshots, but here’s the rotating desktop cube:

I’m running an Athlon 3200 w/512MB, and performance is slightly slower than Gnome/Metacity, but everything’s still quite responsive. Under Feisty, the install was as easy as selecting Beryl in Synaptic and letting it choose and fill the dependencies.

Of course, 3D screensavers run very slowly under it, and I’ve yet to figure out why it can’t show screengrabs in the GL hacks. Otherwise, it’s quite fun, and the multitude of configuration options are a fun time-waster.

In many ways, this is how Enlightenment was supposed to turn out before development wound out.  I understand Microsoft’s newest OS has some sort of spiffy new interface, but even if I were tempted, it doesn’t look like my system is up to the mighty task of running it.
