IE for Linux. No, really.

If you’re into this sort of thing, a guy named Sérgio Lopes has come up with a way to run Internet Explorer in Linux. I tried it, and it works:

…which is to say, it works as best as IE can be expected to. It’s slow, buggy, and of course, it can’t render CSS on a 4th-grade level. Still, if you need it, here it is.

Some folks may need it from time to time. There are still some sites out there that are “best viewed in Internet Explorer.” If you’re one of the people writing those, please stop. Saying “best viewed in Internet Explorer” is like saying, “best swallowed without broken glass and strychnine.”

Me? I’ve already made my decision, and I’m not apologizing. I know this site looks dreadful in IE. It’s not my fault. I wrote to standards, and it renders fine in every other browser. The standard screed among authors may be, “write for Mozilla, hack for IE,” but I have neither the time or inclination to do so (though some have to, in which case this comes in handy). There’s no compelling reason to stick with IE unless you’re on a computer upon which you’re forbidden to install Firefox.

(If you’re in that boat, select the Fauna theme, and keep the window at a width of 900px or more. I use percentage units for layout, but IE doesn’t understand that, so it fails to rescale things correctly.)

See how much prettier life is in a compliant browser?  Get Firefox already.
