A question for Rosie (updated)

From Rosie O’Donnell’s blog. This is her (adopted) daughter, draped in a belt of what looks to be NATO .308. The same publicity-chasing elitist who wants to take guns away from everyone but her own bodyguards.

Tell us, Rosie: how did YOU get that ammo? After all, it’s very commonly used in assault rifles, and according to the never-ending stream of inaccurate, poorly informed, and often outright falsified self-righteous drivel you spout, assault rifles are killing hundreds of police officers and children a day.

In fact, one of the primary pillars of the original Assault Weapons Ban was the outlawing of any device that would allow one person to carry large amounts of ammunition at one time. That’s what, a 30-round belt your kid’s packing?

So tell me, Rosie, why do you have it, and why the heck are you draping it over your child?

No right-wing gun owner in their right mind would do something like this. Is it okay because it makes some kind of vague “statemtent,” or can you just get away with it because you’re rich and privileged?

Aren’t you the same person who said (04/19/1999, on your own television show), and I quote: “You are not allowed to own a gun, and if you do own a gun, I think you should go to prison?”

According to the responses on your poorly-authored, aesthetically challenged blog, it’s to make some sort of “statement.” Yep. You sure like to make “statements,” don’t you? You seem inclined to do so at times and in venues that allow no rebuttal whatsoever, and you don’t give a chance for opposing voices to be heard. And you associate with the same folks who clamor for a “fairness doctrine” in the media?

This is the worst kind of self-righteous, elitist snobbery. It also shows a great deal of intellectual cowardice. I can only hope the people who take your opinions seriously don’t actually vote. Then again, allow me to quote some of your fans in the post:

Joanne
OH SNAP! That picture of VIVI is so real, that it is scary…to think, places in the world children are trained to kill, dressed like that. SHOCK AND AWE! WOOP THERE IT IS! Dear God!

Jessika
Oh, WOW Vivi looks beautiful.! the fact that U let her explore her imagination like that shows what a good mom U R. In some countries though, they are training terrorists that young, how sad is that?

Jessi
My god…that picture. I can’t stop crying. This war is such bullshit.

Here’s hoping they don’t put the bong down long enough to drag themselves to the polls.

You want to know what the biggest danger to your kids is, Rosie? It’s you and people like you. It’s the out-of-touch elite who assume the laws must be decided by your opinions of how you think things “should be.” You’re the people who would remove our civil rights for the satisfaction of a little publicity and praise from the choir.

If people like you have your way, your children will grow to adulthood in a poorly-educated Orwellian police-state. They’ll be as illiterate and inarticulate as your fans, and when that time comes, you can thank yourself.

I’d really like to hear from you, Ms. O’Donnell. What’s more, I’d like to invite you to a debate. We can discuss facts rather than innuendo and emotion. You’re brave enough to drape your child in ammunition; you should at least have the cajones to stand up to a little rebuttal.

Update: Apparently, she can’t weather the heat, so she’s removed the picture from her website and substituted another. I’ve re-linked to an extant image.

Her response to the fallout (which was substantial) was, “My daughter in a soldier costume, national news. [But] 3,500 dead soldiers for real, they don’t comment. Shame.” Shame for what? 3,500 folks who died while voluntarily risking their lives for their country?

No, the only shame here lies with the armchair politicians like Rosie who do nothing but sit around and prognosticate about how they wish the world would be. The world people like her imagine during their afternoon patchouli-and-herbal-tea BS sessions is nothing more than totalitarianism with a different face. The idea of things being dictated by a “well meaning” elite is the same agenda the Christian Right has been pushing for years. You’re no different than them, Rosie.

I can only hope that Child Services investigates this, as lashing ammunition to a minor qualifies as child endangerment.
